Glaucoma FAQs

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes damage to the optic nerve. Vision loss can be temporary or permanent depending on whether it is adequately treated. Glaucoma is often caused by increased pressure in the eyes. However, there are several causes and types of glaucoma that only a trained optometrist can diagnose and treat.

What Causes Glaucoma?

The exact cause of glaucoma is unknown, but many health scientists believe it is due to the blockage of passages that allow fluid drainage into the eyes. This blockage causes pressure buildup in the optic nerve. In addition, the blood vessels surrounding the optic nerve are very fragile and damaged easily, leading to vision loss.

Who Is at Risk of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is more common in patients over 40. Also, African Americans and patients with diabetes or myopia are at greater risk of developing glaucoma. Other risk factors include a family history of glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, or low eye pressure. Yearly eye exams are an excellent preventative measure for identifying and treating glaucoma at the onset.

How Do I Know if I Have Glaucoma?

Glaucoma often presents little to no symptoms in the beginning stages. As it progresses, common symptoms of glaucoma include blurry vision, halos around light, or eye pain. It's essential to visit an eye care professional for routine eye exams or as soon as you notice any concerning symptoms.

How Is Glaucoma Treated?

Glaucoma is treated with prescription eye drops and medicine. In some situations, glaucoma surgery is an option to stop the progression of the disease. However, early diagnosis is the best option to prevent the disease from leading to dramatic vision loss or blindness.
